When Seasons Change
When Seasons Change, It's Time to Check Your Signs
By Bob Egan
Shorter daylight hours mean your illuminated signs are getting noticed more than ever. Now is an ideal time to take a close-up look at your signs – at all times of the day – to ensure they reflect the high quality image you need to present to customers.
Below is a checklist that you can use to guide your sign inspection and maintenance efforts.
- Examine your signs in all phases of light. What do customers see when they drive past at dawn? At dusk? When it is dark? Do any of the lights or letters on the sign need to be replaced?
- Examine your signs from a variety of angles. Are tree branches or other objects on the property blocking the visibility of your sign? Can nearby traffic see debris that is stuck in or around the sign?
- In the brightest part of the day, check the paint on your signs. Is it peeling or faded? Do the colors still reflect your company's brand? Peeling paint sends a dangerous message: We don't pay attention to details.
- Thoroughly inspect your signs for damage. Are any parts loose or dangling? Are their dents or bent areas from being struck by cars, lawn care equipment or snow plows? A damaged sign can hurt your company's reputation and potentially pose a danger to employees and visitors.
- Take photos. Always document your inspection. This can save you money. You'll be able to show the sign technician exactly what needs to be addressed and the materials needed to fix the problem right the first time.
- Make a note on your calendar to complete a thorough inspection of your signs every time the season changes. Just like you replace your batteries in your smoke detectors on Daylight Savings, get into the habit of checking your signs on a regular basis.
- Contact your local sign company or national sign supplier and schedule a service call. Be as detailed as possible when explaining what needs to be repaired.
- Send this check list to the appropriate people within your company. Your signs should look exceptional at EVERY location. Ask your site managers to set up a sign maintenance approach to ensure you are putting your best foot forward with your customers.
