Orscheln Farm & Home Chose Egan Sign as New Exterior Signage Partner

Orscheln Farm & Home did not have a formal Design Control Document for its signage. Its team was dissatisfied with both the design of the signage and the service provided by existing suppliers. As the company grew, it engaged multiple sign vendors, leading to inconsistencies in design, fabrication quality, and illumination across its locations.

Visibility and readability were critical for the retailer for two key reasons. First, many store locations were set back significantly from the main roadway. Second, the building materials used for storefronts varied widely by location. To ensure customers could easily identify each store from the road, signage needed to be large and stand out clearly against the building façade.

Lighting consistency and quality were also concerns—particularly with the pylon sign design. The pill-shaped logo placed within a rectangular sign cabinet created excessive white space, which, when illuminated, visually overpowered the Orscheln logo.

Recognizing the need for improvement, the Orscheln visual merchandising team—led by Amanda Scott and Ron Volske—began planning a signage upgrade.

A team from Egan Sign—including experts in project management, graphic design, engineering, strategic sourcing, and account management—came together to find the best way to solve Orscheln’s sign challenges. Using their combined industry knowledge and experience, they developed and presented several tailored solutions.

These options were shared with key members of the Orscheln team during a meeting at its corporate offices in Moberly, Missouri. Together, the group discussed how the new designs would improve signage visibility and effectiveness across both new and remodeled locations.

The most effective design package featured a reversed logo color scheme to maximize illumination, along with a contrasting backer to help the signs stand out clearly against different building materials. To resolve the issue of excessive white space on the pylon signs, Egan Sign recommended applying blockout vinyl to the second surface of the flex face. This technique illuminated only the logo area, eliminating the overwhelming glow of white light.

Before moving into full production, Egan Sign produced prototypes of each unique sign type to confirm color accuracy and overall quality. These were reviewed and approved by the full Orscheln team.

To ensure consistency moving forward, Egan Sign created a Design Control Document (DCD) that outlines all approved sign types, materials, colors, sizes, and manufacturing methods. This document now serves as a standard guide for all future signage.

The project began in February 2017, and within six months of the initial design presentation, the new signage package had been rolled out to eight locations. As Orscheln continues to grow across new regions, Egan Sign remains proud to support their ongoing signage needs.
